Government considers not replacing up to 80 000 pubic servants

Apr 17, 2011

A recent report posted on CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/story/2011/04/17/cv-election-computer-cuts.html) sheds some light on where the $4 Billion in annual spending reductions the government is proposing, will come from. PM Harper suggests that by consolidating data centres and not replacing the 80 000 retiring public servants in the next few years that "we know we can save all kinds of money there". Minister Biard also suggested targeting the public service for cost savings by cutting the workforce by 5% through attrition resulting in roughly $1 Billion in savings annually. This represents 15 000 jobs lost from the public service a year. Such a cut would be devastating to the proud work of all public servants. We have felt, perhaps a precursor to these cost saving measures here in Nova Scotia, with the loss of trade compliance and the planned moving of our targeting positions from Halifax to Ottawa; as well as the lack of support for, not only our Brothers and Sisters in Yarmouth, but the community as a whole with no support from the Federal government for the ferry link. We are all proud of the work we do and need the support of the government to achieve our mandate. The proposed cuts to the public service seriously underminds our ability to deliver the best service and protection we can to the people of Canada. Please support the public service on election day by voting for the candidate who who will best protect the valuable work we all do in the public service.
